Dr. Kao Featured in Local Paper
Below is an article from the September 24, 2006 LaGrange Daily News highlighting the efforts of many to restore sight to a man from Uganda. Clark-Holder is proud of Dr. Kao and her part in making this possible.
From blindness to sight
By Sherri Brown Staff Writer
It was one of those events made possible only because an intricate network of people were willing to step out and take a chance to help a stranger.
Six years ago Alex Twesigire, a social studies teacher in Kampala, Uganda, began to lose the sight in his left eye. Last week he had surgery at West Georgia Medical Center that corrected his vision.
But the journey from blindness to sight started months ago.
The Ugandan Children’s Choir came to Georgia earlier in the summer because of the efforts of area residents Becky Grubbs and Lynne Moultrie, along with others across the state. The choir toured throughout the summer to perform and raise funds for their school and its orphaned students. Their stirring performance was a highlight of the Sweet Land of Liberty parade here.
The children’s choir was booked for performances through Aug. 31, but when the group arrived, their travel arrangements had them scheduled to return to Uganda on Aug. 14.
“We wanted them to fulfill all the commitments we’d set up for them, so we decided to try to find a way to change those tickets,” Grubbs said.
She and others began contacting British Airways. Most of the conversations were handled by ticket agent Lois Twesigire in Uganda. Lynne Moultrie’s relative, Rennie Moultrie, was handling much of the arrangements. During one of the many conversations with Twesigire, he found out her husband, Alex, 46, had a cataract and was going blind.
And Lois Twesigire felt a sudden inspiration to ask for help.
It was a gutsy move, but the Ugandan woman had been praying for her husband’s healing and she saw the possibility of an answer in a group of Georgians.
“I had to get the guts to send the e-mail, but I did. In my subject I wrote, ‘Looking for an answer,’” Lois Twesigire said.
The couple had sought medical help in their homeland, but were not confident that the local technology would be sufficient.
“When Alex had tests on his eye (in Uganda), the machine broke during the test,” she said.
Rennie Moultrie’s first response was that he didn’t think it would be possible, but then reconsidered after talking to Lynne Moultrie, a nurse at West Georgia Medical Center.
“He asked me about an ophthalmologist, but I was afraid to ask about it,” Lynne Moultrie admitted.
But her friend, Becky Grubbs chided her.
“Lynne, you need a lesson in how to beg. Mother Teresa got what she got because she begged. It’s your Christian duty to go ask. Don’t be afraid,” Grubbs told Moultrie.
Although she was nervous about making a request of such magnitude, Moultrie knew what she was asking for was important. Her own husband, before his death, had gone blind. Lois Twesigire’s request touched her heart.
So Moultrie went to Dr. Anna Kao, an ophthalmologist at Clark-Holder Clinic, and asked if she would donate her services.
Kao didn’t hesitate. She immediately agreed to help.
“That’s what I do every day. It was just giving my time. I’ve been on mission trips before. I know what it’s like in Third World countries,” Kao said.
With a doctor on board, the next hurdle was to get an operating room. That thought intimidated Moultrie even more.
“Everyone told me I should just go straight to Mr. Fulks (CEO of the hospital) because he was the one who would have to make the decision anyway,” Moultrie said.
She sought advice from her co-workers who told her to list “bullet points” to help make her case.
“I didn’t even know what that was, but my son, Casey, did, so he helped me,” she said.
She spent most of a night shift rehearsing her speech to present to Fulks. “I went in to see him and my heart was just racing. I was so nervous,” she said.
Before she finished her full speech, Fulks said she could have the operating room.
“I told him I had a lot more prepared and he said I could finish my speech, but it wouldn’t matter, he’d make it happen anyway,” Moultrie said.
One by one, other helpers surfaced.
Chuck Tigner, owner of Greenville Drugs, volunteered to donate all the medications Alex Twesigire would need.
Others stepped forward to help purchase plane tickets and visas for the couple and their youngest. Lynne Moultrie hosted the family at her home in Gay.
When Alex Twesigire arrived for his first consultation with Kao, he learned that this trip was an answer to his prayers.
Twesigire had a “complicated cataract,” Kao said. “He had a white cataract. We usually don’t see this in someone so young.”
Kao put an implant in Twesigire’s eye, something that isn’t usually done in Third World countries. Immediately after surgery, he was able to see clearly for the first time in six years.
“There is no pain. My vision is perfect. I can read now,” Twesigire said.
The family heads back to their homeland this weekend, leaving new friends and their gratitude.
“Only in America do people care like this,” Kao said.
NEW PHYSICIANS THROUGH WEST POINT ACQUISITION
Dr. James McGowan, President of Clark-Holder Clinic, P.A., is pleased to announce the association of West Point Family Practice on September 1, 2006. Dr. Woody Jones, Dr. Carlos Wise, and Nurse Practitioner, Diane Cousins, have joined the other 33 providers at Clark-Holder clinic providing medical care to approximately 40% of the population of Troup and surrounding counties. They will continue to practice at their current location at 1610 East 10th Street in West Point.
Dr. Woody Jones obtained his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed his residency at the University of Tennessee in Jackson, Tennessee. He came to the area in 1989 and founded the West Point Family Practice in early 2000. Dr. Carols Wise joined the practice in August 2004. He obtained his medical degree at Morehouse School of Medicine and completed his residency at Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning, Georgia. Both physicians are board certified by the American Board of Family Practice.
“In 2005 the practice continued to expand and we added Diane Cousins, a Certified Nurse Practitioner, to help provide care for our patients,” said Dr. Jones. “By joining Clark-Holder Clinic, we are able to use more of our day to see patients and let the large clinic deal with the many business issues required to operate a medical practice.”
All of these providers see pediatric through geriatric patients and use both Lanier Memorial Health Services and the West Georgia Health System. The practice is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All phone numbers will remain the same.
The addition of these providers enhances the Clinic’s ability to service the residents of both Troup and Chambers counties. “With the arrival of KIA and anticipated growth in the area, we feel that it is important for Clark-Holder to have a strong presence in the western part of Troup County and the eastern part of Chambers county,” said Tony Dattilo, Executive Director. He continues, “Physician recruitment is a tremendous challenge, and we are fortunate to be able to add providers of this caliber to our group.”

Vein Treatment
Dr. William Ayers was recently recognized for the successful completion of over 100 procedures using the VNUS technology for the treatment of veins varicosities. For more information on this procedure, please see the “Vein Treatment” tab on the home page.
Blood Pressure Concerns for Teens
Every year for several years, our area physicians have performed high school physicals for the school system. This year, they noted a significant increase in number of students that had high blood pressure, compared to prior years. This seemed to occur also in students who were not overweight and did not appear to have a family history or any other risk factors for hypertension.
The point was brought up that possibly the use of energy drinks may be involved in this phenomenon, because these drinks are full of sodium, caffeine, and other substances such as Taurine, which may adversely affect blood pressure. The use of “energy drinks” has been popularized recently by the advertising media. These are not to be confused with the more benign sports drinks, such as Gatorade and Power Aid, which do not contain caffeine or these other substances. In any case, these students were instructed to see their family physicians to have their blood pressure checked, and to be sure to get follow-up care.
We just want parents to be aware that if your child is in this category, a change in the consumption of these energy drinks may be contributing or aggravating factor with regard to high blood pressure.
It is better for young adults to change and adopt healthy behaviors early on to possibly avoid the complications of hypertension that can occur over the long term, including kidney damage, stroke, and heart disease.

November 30, 2005
FLU SHOTS HAVE ARRIVED. After much effort, Clark-Holder has received a large shipment of flu vaccine. Please contact your provider or the Urgent Care Center to schedule your shot today.
November 2005
Flu Vaccine Update
Like 2004, this year appears to have a shortage of flu vaccine available for the U.S. population. Conflicting reports are coming from the government, the news media and physician practices regarding availability of flu vaccine for 2005.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) continues to advise practitioners to use their supply for high-risk patients. For the CDC perspective on this issue, please visit their website at www.CDC.gov. Their site also contains a U.S. map with reported flu conditions, updated weekly.
Clark-Holder Clinic gave 3500 doses of flu vaccine in 2004 and we have placed orders for over 4000 doses in 2005. We have received a limited supply of vaccine and we are following the CDC guidelines due to the small shipments we have received to date. We have ordered from different suppliers and different companies in order to have the vaccine available for our patients. Several suppliers have advised us they expect to ship only about 1/3 of all vaccine orders in 2005.
We remain diligent in our efforts to obtain flu vaccine. Upon advise from high state officials, CHC recently placed another order direct with the manufacturer that may yield more vaccine.
Our information board inside the clinic will provide weekly flu map updates and information on our available supply. We suggest you talk with your CHC provider and we will do our very best to obtain enough vaccine to satisfy our patient’s needs.

Dr. James McGowan, President, announced today on behalf of the physicians of Clark-Holder Clinic that the Board of Directors has approved a donation of $50,000 to West Georgia Technical College. The funds will come from the Clark-Holder Clinic Medical Education Foundation. In recognition of this long-standing relationship and their generous gift, Dr. Daryl Gilley, President of West Georgia Technical College has also announced that the School of Health Sciences will carry the Clark-Holder Clinic name into the future.
The Clark-Holder Clinic Foundation was established in the mid 1980’s and developed to help young people entering into the field of medicine. Dr. McGowan said the Foundation gave 18 scholarships to young men and women entering medical school, the grants totaling $640,000, but not one of these individuals came back to the Troup County area. The leadership at Clark-Holder decided in 2001 to change the focus of the Foundation and use the funds for specific projects that would help the local area.
In June of 2003, the Foundation partnered with CB&T to donate a house to the Jimmy Carter Work Project. The Foundation has given several scholarships to individuals pursuing advancement in the medical field -- especially, in the field of radiology at West Georgia Technical College, with the stipulation upon graduation they practice their newfound skills in LaGrange.
Clark-Holder Clinic has been a partner with West Georgia Technical College since the early 1990’s, and has provided faculty to the college and has provided students internship opportunities for clinical experience. Students work alongside Clinic staff, who provide hands-on training for students in phlebotomy, radiology, medical assisting, and licensed practical nursing. For more information on either of our organizations, please visit our web sites at www.clarkholderclinic.com, and www.westgatech.edu.
Dr. Gilley and Dr. McGowan also indicated the College’s and Clinic’s interest in expanding our relationship in the radiology program to include several new programs in the advanced imaging technologies including ultrasound and sonography. There are very few programs in Georgia for this specialty and a scarcity of these individuals in the medical community nationally.
West Georgia Technical College has now obtained the funds necessary to purchase the former Raytheon building. Through the generous support of the community, the $1.2 million additional dollars required to supplement the $3 million appropriated by the State have been pledged. This ensures the purchase of the building by the end of this year. What remains are costs associated with the renovation of the building. Thanks in large part to the leadership of Representative Jeff Brown, the State will provide $3.4 million of that amount with the College responsible for raising the remaining $2.6 million. Dr. Gilley is optimistic that the remaining funds can be raised over the next two years to complete the project as other members of the corporate community choose to invest in the future of this community.

The flu season of 2004 has experienced a crisis with the shortage of vaccine due to a manufacturing issue from one of the major suppliers. This has caused vaccine to be highly rationed and difficult to obtain. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta has issued guidelines regarding distribution and administration.
Even though flu vaccines are heavily rationed, Clark-Holder Clinic has remained diligent in its efforts to obtain flu vaccine for the citizens of Troup County. These efforts have been rewarded and the clinic has been able to obtain approximately 3500 flu vaccines for our patients. Due to our sophisticated computer programs, we have been able to identify those patients in high- risk categories and offer them the vaccine first. Please contact your provider for more information.

Clark-Holder Clinic has partnered with Commercial Bank and Trust to financially sponsor a home. Many of the employees and physicians actively participated in this special event by helping build during this week.
Though the first day was filled with torrential rains, the walls went up and the staff that were there had a great time and many good stories to tell. Clark-Holder was also involved in providing medical support for the first aid station and dispensed many bandaids and water during this hot week in June.
It was a pleasure to get to know the family that will be living in this home as we all worked side by side to help make their dream of home ownership come true. By some miracle and much hard work, the house was finished in one week!
